This greatest architecture was begun in 1003 by Rajaraja 1 and completed in 1010 CE & was designed to represent a cosmic structure The Mahameru

Brihadishvara is a Sanskrit composite word composed of Brihat which means "big, great, lofty, vast"and Ishvarameans "lord, Shiva, supreme being, supreme athma (soul)".The name means the "great lord, big Shiva" temple. Locally, the temple is called the big temple, while in historic inscriptions it is also referred to as the Rajarajeswaram and Peruvudaiyar temple. ”

This temple is dedicated to Lord Siva represented by a linga of 3.66m high and named Rajarajeshvaramudayar after the king himself. Infact it is also called a the Big Temple as it is huge.

This complex has the main temple with five subshnrines for chandikesvara, Amman, Subramanya, Ganesa and for Karuvur Devar, the real priest. There are two madapas for Nataraja and Nandi. A cloister mandapa runs round the complex. Two gopuras - Rajarajan and Keralantaka are of the same period as the main temple and the arch is of the Maratha Period.

The niches in the lower wall of the temple depict various deities like Ganesa, Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Bhikshatana,Kalantaka,Natesha to name a few. The upper wall carries the figure of Tripurantaka only.
